What kind of coverage do I need? Where do I go to get the best coverage for my money? Is my insurance company or the one I’m looking at a good company? These are just a few of the questions we all have when shopping for auto insurance. This can be a tedious (and sometimes frustrating) process.
Here is how you can make auto insurance shopping much easier -and- get the best insurance coverage for the best rate.
This advice also applies to homeowners insurance. Combining your auto and homeowners insurance (if you own a home) can also save you money. I’ll save that info for another article, but will refer to both auto and home insurance in this article as this shopping advice will apply to either.
Basically, there are three ways to buy home and auto insurance.
You may purchase insurance from a Direct Writer, a Captive Agent, or an Independent Agency.
- A Direct Writer insurance company sells one type of insurance usually purchased online and over the phone.
- A Captive Agent typically only represents one insurance company and offers only the products offered by that company.
- An Independent Agency has no allegiance to any one particular insurance company, has the ability to comparison shop and provides choices regarding your best coverage options.
Most people believe that finding a low premium is the most important part of buying home and auto insurance.
Equally important however is how things transpire on ‘Claim Day’, which unfortunately often reveals inadequacies in coverage. On Claim Day you will find out if you are insured correctly. Many times Direct Writers or Captive Agents offer coverage with inadequacies that leave you holding the bag with high expenses on claim day. Direct Writer’s advertise such things as a “15%” savings, and the “lowest possible rates”, however the reality is that on average we can meet and usually beat their prices. Furthermore, when you get insured through a Direct Writer you are usually talking to someone in a different time zone and usually you will never talk to the same person twice. Relationship is an important component of the insured / insurance agent relationship, for a myriad of reasons, and the Direct Writer model inherently lacks in the relationship department. Captive Agents are limited to the products and prices offered by the one company they represent, regardless of their competitiveness. When rates and coverage’s change, and they do, they are limited to the offerings of that one company and inherently lack objectivity as far as presenting you with other options in the insurance marketplace.
For the reasons articulated above we strongly encourage you to work with an Independent Agency.
